Handling things One Check at a Time
I closed my eyes with small tears running down my face, I needed to stop focusing on the lack of romance in my life and start adulting like I’ve been meaning to for weeks now. I could throw my focus back into my store that I wasn’t giving much attention since Josh came back into town, that store always did remind me of him, but whatever, that’s what I’m going to do! I’m going to make sure I have the best outdoor store Denver has ever seen, I say with strength and determination as I wipe the tears from my cheeks. I reach for my phone and set an early alarm because tomorrow is a new day of adulting business woman style.
A brand new day had fast approached and I wake up feeling ready to handle the day. I wanted to make sure this day would go smooth sailing, so I made a quick checklist. First thing on the list, look like a professional business owner. I go to my closet pick out an old button up blazer and pen skirt I once wore to an interview a long time ago that surprisingly still fitted me…well kind of. I wipe out the wrinkles throughout my pen skirt then toss my short hair in a tiny bun; I then put a check-marked beside look like a professional. Next, on the list eat something healthy for breakfast, nothing fried dripping with syrup, I scratch my head, this is going to be a tough one. I don’t even remember the last time I actually ate something healthy for breakfast that wasn’t smothered in layers of fattening calories. I will just stop by Einstein bagels and get myself a multi-grain bagel with low fat crème cheese I think to myself while grinning proudly that I was handling each thing on my list like a normal adult.
“Emma, do you have bath sponge I could use, I’m going to give Darrell a sponge bath, I think he’s due for one.” Just hearing the words sponge bath made my stomach turn, that’s disgusting if she thinks she can use my own personal bathroom to scrub down some old man and his old balls she better think again. Just as I was about to go ape shit crazy I look down at my list to see don’t let Aunt Irene get to you today, shit why did I write that? I had to think of alternative of how to handle this, AHA I know! I then dialed Amber’s number I remembered she owed me big since our “girl’s night out” turned in a total shit show.“Amber, hey are you home and will you be there for the next hour?” I say like there was no room for negation.“Yes I will be home, why do you ask? I didn’t want to give much detail because if Amber knew I was dropping off Aunt Irene and Darrell to use her shower for a sponge bath she would flee the city ASAP, but she owed me so it was only fair.
“Aunt Irene I’m going to take you and Darrell to Amber’s place she has a more of a spacious tub you could use for Darrell.” I felt a little bit guilty that I was dropping off the senior citizens to my best friend’s house but I needed to focus on handling my adult list I was on a roll and I couldn’t have anything get in my way.
The three of us arrive at Amber’s little home that was located outside of downtown as we slowly make it up the steps Amber opens the front door with one of her creatures glued to the side of her hip, “Emma? What’s going on? Who’s with you?” I rush up towards Amber while Aunt Irene and Darrell slowly make their way towards the door.“Hey yeah I didn’t want to tell you over the phone but you owe me and Darrell needs a sponge bath so I told them they use your tub.”
