The Dilemma

“Free at last!” I think to myself and the fact that Aunt Irene doesn’t have a car with her brings more joy to my day! I go about the day doing my usual errands, such as stopping to grab a chocolate caramel crème filling donut with a hot black cup of coffee, check on my store, Angela, and then head back home to relax. I fall onto my couch with a victorious feeling and relaxed knowing Aunt Irene couldn’t pop up at any minute, she would have to call me to pick her up unless Darrell gives her a ride back, which I wasn’t too concerned about with how slow that man moves. Just as I close my eyes to take a quick cat nap with complete silence surrounding me I suddenly feel the vibration of my phone go off. I glanced at my phone to see who it could be, but the number that was blinking at me I had no recognition of. At first, I thought to ignore it, but then again maybe it was Alessandro calling from his work landline or something I then quickly picked up before I missed the call.

“EMMA!! I need you to meet at the hospital, I’m heading there now, and I’m riding in an ambulance.” The voice on the other end of the phone was not Alessandro it was my Aunt Irene. I should have known, I mean who in the hell uses landlines these days? I think as shake my head back and forth. “Aunt Irene? What’s going on? Whose phone are you on? Are you okay?” To my surprise, I actually felt concerned for her and a little bit worried too, “Oh doll I’m fine, it’s Darrell that isn’t doing too hot…he had a heart attack, this is his phone I’m using to call you, not exactly sure where I put mine, anyways doll meet me at Rose Medical Center that’s the hospital I will be waiting at.”

Half an hour later I arrive at the hospital park my truck then go hunt down Aunt Irene and Darrell. It didn’t take long to find Aunt Irene, she was hanging out at the nurse's station telling them her many tall tales that she had. “Hey, what happened? Is Darrell okay?” I dared to asked, by the look of the little old man I wouldn’t be surprised if he ended up dying due to my Aunt Irene and her assistant requirements. “Emma! You made it!” she says as she squeezes me tight. “I don’t know happened? Everything was going well then all the sudden I look over at Darrell to hand me my shaker to mix some drinks and then next thing I know I see Darrell holding his chest slowly falling to the floor, I thought at first he was just tired…didn't think he was actually having a heart attack!” As I tried listening to my aunt’s side of the story nurses kept interrupting during our conversation to make sure my aunt was okay as if she was the one that had the heart attack. “Is Darrell okay?? What caused his heart attack, what did you do??” I nervously asked my aunt.

Ever have those days when the room slows down and all you can see is everyone stops to give you weird a look while whispering to the person next to them and you know without a doubt they are judging your ass? Well, this was one of those moments. I was beginning to look like a crazy person while Aunt Irene looked like a saint before I could ask much more Darrell’s doctor taps my shouldered to get my attention.
